Volvo P1800

On the way home today, I spotted the world’s most elegant car – the Volvo P1800. Absolutely gorgeous, so good looking it deserves its own post here.

I don’t know why this post looks so strange – the image uploading tool repeatedly crashed Firefox and Explorer was an absolute nightmare to work with.

New page: Live Gigs

I’ve added a new page so you lovely visitors can keep track of any upcoming gigs I have. It will also work as an archive for past dates and I may very well add the gigs and spex shows I did in Kalmar if I have the time.

Webcomics, pt IV

It is time for a few new recommendations!

If you liked Dresden Codak, there is a good chance you will like Gunnerkrigg Court. It follows the protagonist Antimony Carver’s adventures at the eponymous school/institute. The Court itself is greatly reminiscent of the castle Gormenghast from Mervyn Peak’s books but set in the modern day, with internet access, robots and science classes. It also has some parallells to Harry Potter with a boarding school setup, school houses and class room drama. Combine these two things, put them through a Dresden Codak filter and possibly you have something that approaches Gunnerkrigg Court. It is beautifully drawn with over 560 pages as of this writing.

In the vein of Questionable Content, we have the long running Least I Could Do, which is something so rare as a daily updated webcomic. It follows a group of friends and their somewhat inept attempts to live their lives. Rayne is the one most of the action circles around, his main motive in life appearing to be to get laid. It is not exactly a deep comic, but often very funny!

And finally this time we have Menage a 3. It follows comic book geek Gary and his troubles – which are plentiful. The name comes from the fact that he has to share an apartment with two other people, two very strange girls. The drawing style is western, but it has a certain japanese edge of hysteria that makes it stand out a bit.

New Adventures In Studio Land, pt II

All right, so that did not turn out very well. Two of eight songs were not recorded for some reason. My performances are so-so and the sound is too boomy with too little high end/clarity. They also lack the additional arrangements for bridges, intros, outros etcetera that I came up with the other day.

Keyo was unhappy with the results too and has chosen not to do any vocals this time around, we plan to do proper recording in a proper studio in a few weeks instead. Before proper recording we will also have the opportunity to do at least one gig, so hopefully nerves will be a smaller factor next time.

New Adventures in Studio Land

Yesterday, I recorded my guitar parts for an upcoming album project. We are still in the “pre-production” stage, so this is more like a preliminary recording, to be used as a reference for future rehearsal/recording/arranging and for getting gigs.

We recorded in a small one room studio in Lund. It is generally used for laying down hip hop vocals, so after trying and failing to squeeze me, a chair and a guitar into the mic booth, I moved out to the sofa and we put the microphone stand over the armrest, bringing the microphone close to the guitar. Not exactly ideal, but it worked!

Then came the realisation that since I have not yet written down the arrangements for the songs with bar counts and intro/coda etc, I had no idea what the song structures were. Most of the guitar parts are very repetitive, so this was a real problem. We tried with Keyo sitting in the vocal booth quietly singing the lyrics, but it leaked too much into the mic. So, he had to stand and give a little wave for every transition into verse, chorus, bridge etc., keeping the song going in his head.

This actually worked well and I did something like four of eight songs in first takes. After a four hour session, including lunch break, my brain was well and truly fried and I went home for a very quiet night with dr House. Tomorrow is Keyo’s turn to do the vocals. I’m very curious as to how it will all sound in the end.

We are planning to do more intense rehearsing and arranging for a couple of weeks now, with our first gig the 30th of May. We hope to do final recording at the end of May too. More to come on this!
